Daisi Inclusive Music Programme

Since 2012 Daisi has successfully secured support from National Foundation for Youth Music.  This has enabled Daisi to explore and develop sustainable, accessible and inclusive musicmaking opportunities for those more vulnerable and harder to reach young people across Devon and Torbay.

It was nice to have some creative freedom enabled without a limit or restriction. There was something fresh about feeling responsible for it, feeling trusted to define your own goalposts.” – Toby, young music participant

Youth Music’s Catalyser fund 2023 – 2026 is supporting Daisi’s musical inclusion development in North Devon. Our role is to bring together and support people, places and organisations who want to bring the transformative power of music to the most in need. Our project includes;

  • Workforce Development – increasing diversity and growing the music workforce e.g. providing mentoring opportunities, and a music leaders network

  • Youth Leadership opportunitiesidentifying and developing progression pathways for young, emerging musicians e.g. stage and event managers, peer educators, young trainee music leaders

  • Developing resources and training to support music leaders

  • Focused school cluster groups in three identified areas of need: Newton Abbot, Torbay and North Devon

  • Targeted projects – working in Pupil Referral Units (PRUs), sheltered housing, working with young people who are NEET, the Youth Offending services, YMCA, Medical Tuition Services, Youth Clubs and many more

  • Development of Youth Voice – working with community groups, art and music organisations, and youth services to explore and trial models to support youth voice

  • Live performance opportunities – festival events providing performance spaces and workshops. Open mic sessions, supported busking, access to recording studios

  • Strategic partner role with Devon and Torbay Music Education Hubs

  • Partnership with range of  organisations across the region and nationally

“It takes special people to be able to engage with our pupils and build the trust required to teach them, the music sessions have shown progress for our students in their confidence, self-esteem, ability to work as a group and of course their music skills. We are extremely grateful to Daisi, especially Lyndon and Laura for their persistence, resilience, and ability to share and spread their love of music in all its forms.”
