Art Effect

Art Effect was originally a collaboration between Devon schools, mental health and wellbeing support settings, teachers, young people, and professional artists.  The research and development project explored the impact of creating artistic opportunities in school, and in non-formal education settings, supporting the wellbeing of young people who had identified themselves as needing extra support with their mental health and wellbeing.

“Best bit was doing what I want without being judged.  Thank you for being there for me.  I just feel better for expressing myself.”Jade, age 13, Axminster

Daisi recruited a range of different artists, specialising in different art forms including visual art, dance and music. The project was supported by Devon County Council. Through consultation, research and development, a model of working was developed to ensure the maximum impact and effectiveness of using creativity to support mental health and wellbeing.

ArtEffect developed the case for the positive contribution that creative arts workshops can bring in supporting the emotional, psychological and social wellbeing needs of children and young people in Devon and Torbay. The key summary findings from the project demonstrated that young people gained confidence, increased selfexpression and a sense of achievement and improved wellbeing through forming new friendships and taking part in the activity. Young people also noted that they saw a connection between how they were feeling and doing something creative.

For some participants this is the only time they will really get to feel like they are achieving and are successful. Some of these children aren’t successful in the classroom and they may not be academically successful, so this project has had a big impact.”
