Talking Turns
Increasing children’s oracy through arts-based teaching and learning
Talking Turns is a partnership project with Daisi (lead organisation), Doorstep Arts, Sound Communities, and Riviera Education Trust with up to 11 participating partner schools.
This research and development project aims to create positive impact for children’s oracy, their learning confidence, and their access to the curriculum through collaborative working over 6 terms (summer 2022 – spring 2024). Talking Turns is about enriching, inspiring and increasing access to learning in and through the arts, in sustainable ways that are relevant and engaging to children.
Talking Turns is co-designed with Torbay schools and cultural partner organisations, in response to an identified need. The schools identified that oracy (oracy is the ability to articulate ideas, develop understanding and engage with others through spoken language – Oracy Benchmarks, Voice 21) is a vital key to curriculum engagement. Increased teacher confidence and knowledge in arts-based learning practice is increasing children’s oracy in meaningful, motivating, appropriate-to-needs ways.
The project investigates ‘How can arts-based learning practice support the development of children’s oracy?’ through teachers and creative practitioners co-planning, practicing and learning together. It also includes CPD, ‘Away Afternoons’, and wider sharing’s of learning. Talking Turns focuses on exploring and evaluating how drama and related arts techniques embed creative and diverse ways to support children’s oracy education.
The Talking Turns project runs in schools for 6 terms from summer 2022 – spring 2024.
