Foster Family Stories Project – Exhibition of Patchwork Textile Wall Hangings

This is an online exhibition to share the art work created as part of a Daisi project, in partnership with Fostering Devon and Daisi Artist Monica Shanta Brown. In February 2020 the project saw Devon foster families come together in 3 areas of Devon for a day of creativity and exploration, to try new art forms, learn new skills and techniques and share their stories and experiences.

The work created as part of this project is also available to view as part of the ArtWorkExeter’s Window Exhibitions from the 4th – 17th September at AWEsome Art Space, 27 Paris Street, Exeter.

About the Project

There are around 300 foster families in Devon and through this project Fostering Devon and Daisi invited these families to attend workshops in Exeter, North Devon and South Devon, to share a creative day with Daisi Artist Monica Shanta Brown and have the chance to explore and share their voices and their experiences of fostering and being in care through the art work that they created together.

Each workshop day was packed with activities which saw the families working together to create:

*Family vision boards
*Family colour palettes
*A short story of a memorable day or a day they would love to have
*Textile swatches using different techniques such as:

  • Stencil printing
  • Block printing
  • Appliqué
  • Photo transfers

Some of the textile swatches created by the families were framed and taken home after each workshop, whilst others were made into patchwork wall hangings by Monica, and these we are now thrilled to be able to display as part of this exhibition.

When asked how they felt after taking part in the workshop day, participants expressed that they were…

“Happy” – “Inspired” – “Tired”

“I had the best time ever being with my family”
