A River’s Journey brought 11 schools from the Axe Valley learning community together, within Daisi’s Inspiration Aspiration Partnership project. It involved students studying and exploring their local area, and exhibiting their findings through art, writing, drama, dance and music.
A River’s Journey brought young people into contact with professional writers, artists and local cultural amenities, in which experiencing local places first-hand through creative activity inspired them to create their own artistic responses. A visit to Dorchester Museum inspired the creation of plesiosaur puppets, while an exploration of local beaches resulted in a beautiful mural and the design and production of marine-themed clay tiles. A trip to Seaton Marshes involved pond-dipping and identifying creatures, which became the starting point for sculpture and performance poetry, while a river walk inspired poetry, dance and music.
A celebratory exhibition at Axe Valley Community College on 5 May 2011 gave the children and young people an opportunity to share what they had learnt and created with parents, teachers, project partners and the community.
